Conference is Over – Thank You

The Aes 49th Audio for Games conference is now behind us!


A tremendous “Thank You” to all of the volunteers, committee members, participants, attendees, sponsors and our keynote speaker Robin Rimbaud.

This years audio track was a laser-focused cross section of technical, usable, and accessible information on the art of interactive audio.

You can view all of the activity from the #AudioForGames twitter hashtag that was generated during the conference on Storify.

Session sign-ups now live

Less than one day to go until the big day, we’re looking forward to an exciting conference.  There’s still time to register if you haven’t got your ticket yet.

Attendees can now sign-up on line to the Dolby reception as well as the FMOD, Fabric and MixGenius hands-on sessions.  You can sign-up throughout the conference too, but don’t forget to register early to secure your place.

AES49 Audio for Games: Keynote & Additional Sessions

Audio for Games is delighted to announce:

Keynote Speaker Robin Rimbaud, aka “Scanner” – Inspiration from a Different Place

Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner is an artist, writer, plasticien sonore and composer working in London, whose works traverses the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and form, connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres – a partial list would include sound design, film scores, computer music, digital avant-garde, contemporary composition, large-scale multimedia performances, product design, architecture, fashion design, rock music and jazz.

Since 1991 he has been intensely active in sonic art, producing concerts, installations and recordings, the albums Mass Observation (1994), Delivery (1997), and The Garden is Full of Metal (1998) hailed by critics as innovative and inspirational works of contemporary electronic music. He scored the hit musical comedy Kirikou & Karaba (2007), wrote Europa 25 a new National Anthem for Europe in 2005, premiered his six-hour show Of Air and Ear (2008) at the Royal Opera House in London, designed the sound for the new Philips Wake-Up Light (2009), and national cinema campaign for Sprint USA (2012) Chanel’s Fall-Winter collection (2012) and music for the Olympic Ceremony in London in 2012.

Session: Mixing Panel hosted by John Broomhall

Assembled by guru Rob Bridgett, John Broomhall will host a panel of mixologists in a discussion of the current state of interactive and dynamic mixing.

Session: “The Future of Game Audio” – A Retrospective – Adele Cutting

Adele Cutting revisits the 2009 AES 35 panel which discussed what the future of game audio would be. Find out how close we are today to the dreams of yesterday.

AES49 Audio for Games: Sessions So Far…

The first sessions for the upcoming AES 49th Audio for Games Conference  were announced this week via @Aesgames on twitter.

Here is a summary of what has been announced so far…

Session: Crossing the Streams – Scott Selfon (Microsoft)

It’s often easy to lock into the mindset of churning out the hundreds (or thousands) of sound assets that a game needs. But what happens when we step beyond audio as a reactive force, and instead inject audio into the title’s game design? Scott will show and discuss specific examples from a number of shipped titles of situations where audio has moved beyond the “event->wave file” archetype to more uniquely interact with and drive gameplay, both technically and creatively.

Session: If it’s too loud… – Garry Taylor (SCEE)

Garry Taylor talks through the science of loudness in games.

Sponsored Session: Dolby Audio for Games Reception

Audio for Games sponsor Dolby will be hosting a drinks reception at their London HQ after the first day of sessions.

Session:  Emerging Web Audio API

– Olivier Thereaux (W3C Audio Chair) and Jory Prum (Html 5 Audio)

In this session, we will explore the capabilities of the web browser as the next exciting platform for gaming and audio. Olivier Thereaux from the BBC and chair of the Audio Working Group at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) will give an interactive overview of the upcoming standards for audio on the web: the web audio API for audio processing and synthesis in the browser, and the web MIDI API bridging the browser and the multitude of MIDI devices for music creation. The session will include many demos hinting at the great potential of bringing audio to the web, and the web to audio, and will end with a questions and answers session exploring the opportunities and challenges of building games on the Open Web Platform.

AES49 Audio for Games: Location and Registration Fees Announced

Things are on track to make the AES49th Audio for Games conference in February 2013 a memorable foray into  the art of realtime interactive sound.


Here are a few things that have recently fallen into place:

The conference will be held at 2 Carlton House Terrace in the heart of London, right next door to where the 2009 conference was held. Directions and other travel information can be found on the “How to Get There” page.


Thanks to everyone who participated in the preliminary call for papers! Paper acceptance announcements have gone out to successful authors and the deadline for final papers is 5 Nov 2012.


Registration for the event begins in November 2012 and pricing can be found on the “Register” page.

Announcing the AES 49th Conference on Audio for Games

We are excited to announce that the Audio Engineering Society will host its third conference on Audio for Games in February 2013. More details to come, but it will again be in central London. The call for participation has been announced, so come along and get involved!
